S7 Shaanthians Discover the World of Coir
What many consider agricultural waste can become a source of livelihood, enterprise and sustainable opportunity. The coir industry beautifully demonstrates how nature’s simplest resources can be transformed into products of value.
The S7 Shaanthians of Shaanthi ICSE School, Periyakottai, visited Sri Balaji Best Fibres, Coir Pit Traders, Kuralkuttai, Udumalpet, as part of their Geography lesson on Industries.
The students explored the fascinating journey of coconut husks through retting, fibre extraction, cleaning, drying, grading and baling. They also discovered how coir pith, a by-product of fibre extraction, finds valuable application as a growing medium in horticulture.
Beyond understanding the manufacturing process, the students learnt how the coir industry generates rural employment, supports local communities and adds economic value to agricultural by-products. They also recognised the importance of resource conservation and responsible waste management.
For the Shaanthians, this visit brought an industrial process out of the textbook and into the real world. It helped them appreciate the people, skills, machinery and resources that come together to sustain an industry.
Sometimes, the greatest discoveries begin when we learn to see value in what others overlook. A humble coconut husk became a lesson in enterprise, innovation and sustainable possibilities.
