Have you ever sat on a chair and wondered what stories it holds? On August 1st, our young
chemists from Grade 8 of jothi Nagar campus didn’t just study Elements, Compounds, and
Mixtures—they walked into their real-life applications at Sun Plastics, Pakkothipalayam.
From the clink of metal fittings to the soft give of a polymer seat, chemistry came alive in
unexpected corners. Students stood inches away from the rhythmic beat of moulding
machines, spotting aluminium in frames, iron and steel in screws, and polyurethane foams in
cushions—not just as materials, but as science in motion.
What was once a chapter in a textbook unfolded in bolts, paints, fibres, and alloys. They
learned how elements fuse into compounds, how mixtures form the backbone of innovation,
and how science isn’t always in a lab—it’s sometimes in a chair you sit on.
Beyond the formulas and the machinery, a deeper question emerged: What happens to these
materials when the chair breaks, when it’s thrown away? That sparked spirited conversations
on recycling, sustainability, and how tomorrow’s industries can be both efficient and ethical.
One student put it best: “I’ll never look at a plastic chair the same way again.”
