The local vegetable markets of Pollachi and Udumalpet turned into lively classrooms for the children of Shaanthi International Play School, Mahalingapuram and S1 – UDT Shaanthi Montessori. With curiosity and excitement, the children explored colourful vegetables, observed vendors and customers, and discovered how everyday buying and selling happens. They also learned to identify different vegetables, understand weighing through balance scales, and, at UDT Shaanthi Montessori, experience the difference between wholesale and retail markets.
The visits offered children something beyond textbook learning—a chance to observe, ask questions, interact and learn through real experiences. For many, the traditional market was a new and refreshing environment compared with the departmental stores they usually visit.
Experiences like these gradually nurture confidence, independence, curiosity, practical thinking and respect for the work of others. As these little learners grow, such early encounters with everyday life can help them become more aware, capable and responsible individuals who understand that meaningful learning happens far beyond the classroom.
