The Town Beyond Our Doorstep

S2 Shaanthians Discover the People and Places That Keep a Community Moving

A town is not merely a collection of buildings, roads and busy streets. It is a living network of people, professions and public services, each playing a part in making everyday life possible.

The S2 Shaanthians of Shaanthi ICSE School, Periyakottai, and Shaanthi International Play School, Mahalingapuram, embarked on an educational visit around Udumalpet, including a visit to the local Fire Station. They discovered the important role firefighters play in responding to emergencies, rescuing people and protecting lives. Exploring fire engines, hoses, ladders, safety equipment and uniforms gave them a closer understanding of fire safety and emergency preparedness, including the importance of calling 101 during a fire emergency.

Their journey around the town introduced them to essential community institutions such as the Post Office, Police Station, Hospital, Bank, School, Market, Bus Stand and Municipal Office. Each place revealed a different responsibility—from communication and public safety to healthcare, financial services, education and civic administration.

Such visits help children understand that a community functions through shared responsibility and the dedicated work of many people. They develop civic awareness, observation and a deeper appreciation of the services that often go unnoticed in daily life.

A town becomes meaningful when we understand not just the places we pass, but the people, purpose and public service behind them.
